STUDENT UNIFORM POLICY
Rationale:
• A uniform dress code reinforces in students a pride in their individual appearance, a connectedness between students, recognition of themselves as an integral part of the school community, and assists in developing pride in representing the school. Issues of equality, health and safety, and expense are also factors that contribute to the establishment of the Dress Code.
Purpose:
• To promote equality and a sense of belonging amongst all students.
• To develop a sense of pride in, and identification with our school.
• To maintain and enhance the positive image of the school community.
• To provide durable clothing that is cost effective and practical for our school environment.
• To provide "a right of passage" through the Education Centre by means of the uniform styles.
Implementation:
• After much consultation with the school community, School Council has developed a Dress Code that we believe provides choice for the students, allows for students to safely engage in the many and varied school activities, and caters for the financial constraints of families.
• The uniform dress code applies during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when students are on school excursions.
• For OH & S reasons the uniform dress code specifies plain black, enclosed toe and heel, footwear for all students. At Secondary level fully enclosed plain black footwear will be required in Technology, Science and other ‘practical’ subjects which require better protection. The maximum heel height for all footwear is 3 cm.
ALL students are required to wear the new MEC Uniform.
• A Post Compulsory (Years 11 & 12) top has been developed in consultation with senior students.
• Good quality second hand uniforms will be accumulated and stored at the Centre for the use of students as required or to be purchased by parents.
• The student Dress Code, including details of uniform items and places of purchase, will be published in School Handbooks and in the Centre newsletter at the beginning and end of each year.
• School Council requires the Deputy Principals to be responsible for implementation of the Dress Code in a manner consistent with the Student Code of Conduct.
• Parents seeking exemptions to the Dress Code due to religious beliefs, ethnic or cultural background, student disability, health condition or economic hardship must apply in writing to the Deputy Principal.
• There will be further development of this policy in relation to body piercing, hairstyles, make-up, jewellery etc
Evaluation:
• This policy will be reviewed as part of the Centre’s annual review cycle.
